This project was part of a larger group show based on one question, "What is the Future of Soul?" Our focus was based around the food deserts of West Oakland.
I photographically covered the areas in West Oakland having community gardens, agricultural programs and visiting inspired leaders that are providing community access, education and tools to a healthier way of life.
I then designed and constructed a sculpture piece of 20 box on a rotating 5 piece structure that would engage an audience of all ages. By having to turn and uncover a multi-sided piece the object was to stir curiosity.
One side showed the many portraits of the gardens, kids, leaders and volunteers of the programs. A photoethnography tale of what it looks like when the community gets involved and motivates around health. Another side had a black and white mosaic map of the area we covered in Oakland. The third side displayed quotes that were words of inspiration and the cornerstone for the work to be done. The last side was a white board in which viewers could write what ever they experience with the piece or in relaitonship to food and how it's power to nourish the soul is powerful.
